Enrichment Activities

At The Hurlingham Academy, we are committed to the development of the whole child.

This includes promoting their understanding of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and those of others. Learning experiences outside of the classroom in the form of structured extra-curricular activities are a key part of achieving this. The school takes advantage of its geographical location to run trips throughout the year to museums, galleries and other places of cultural significance in central London. This culminates in our ‘Cultural Capital’ week at the beginning of July, where every pupil is given the opportunity to visit at least two culturally significant locations in the capital, promoting an understanding of their role as citizens of London, modern Britain and the world. We also promote cultural appreciation and a love of reading for pupils through opening our library every day, where students have access to a wide range of titles.

The academy also enjoys a vibrant sporting culture, with both girls and boys from across all year groups representing us in competition in a variety of sports. These include, but are not limited to: football, handball, rugby and athletics. The academy places considerable emphasis on the value of sport as a means of promoting self-confidence, personal development, and pride in one’s school.

The Hurlingham Academy is committed to constant self-improvement regarding its extra-curricular offer. If you would like to discuss our offer further, including opportunities for volunteer coaching, please get in touch with Katherine Ling, Assistant Principal Achievement and Enrichment.

What is the award all about?

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award offers an individual challenge to young people between the ages of 14 and 25. It consists of a balanced, non-competitive programme of voluntary activities, which encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility to themselves and service to the community. In order to gain an award a pupil must show improvement through persistence and achievement.

What are the benefits of participation?

Universities and future employers are often keen to interview candidates who have gained Duke of Edinburgh's Awards, because they know that such involvement means a young person is proactive and may have developed a whole host of skills.

At The Hurlingham Academy we believe that studying Music and Performing Arts helps pupils to become more confident, cultured and creative individuals. We offer individual as well as group music lessons as part of our Enrichment programme. We also have an annual school show; this year students will by performing Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

This term we are offering 21 different Enrichment opportunities on a Monday afternoon for Years 7-10.

Every pupil in KS3 is part of at least one Enrichment activity in the school. Pupils work vertically so they are able to develop their community beyond their own age group and form friendships with others as they pursue new interests. Our Enrichment leaders aim to develop the confidence and resilience of our pupils by encouraging them to explore new ideas, tackle new challenges and learn knowledge outside of their classroom curriculum.
