Students get an education with character at The Hurlingham Academy

/ Categories: News

The Hurlingham Academy hosted its first ever Enrichment Showcase this week to celebrate students’ talents and the extracurricular experiences they have enjoyed this year.

The academy is committed to providing an Education with Character and has created a rich and varied programme of enrichment opportunities for students. Given the success of its Taste of Hurlingham event each autumn, they therefore chose to welcome parents, governors and local primary pupils to share in this and see what students have been learning outside of lessons.

At the Showcase, students from across the school got the chance to share some of the exciting activities they have been involved in throughout the year – through an array of performances, exhibitions and presentations. This included Duke of Edinburgh students sharing their recent expedition experience and the Hurlingham Magazine Society sharing their first edition of ‘Bookshelf’ – the student run collection of fiction.

Parents, pupils and staff were invited to watch Jam Band, Brass Band and The Hurlingham Academy Choir in their first performances. The Drama Society, meanwhile, treated the audience to a trailer of the school production of Macbeth, which will be performed in full in the autumn term.

In preparation for the event, students also created a photo exhibition representing their favourite experiences so far this year – from debating club, science masterclasses and art history workshops to film club, choir and dance. Other popular options included the school’s Empower and Create classes, where pupils boost their confidence and investigate different social enterprises, as well as the many opportunities to get active such as basketball, rounders and weight-training.

Leon Wilson, Principal of The Hurlingham Academy, said:

“At our academy, we firmly believe in the value of an Education with Character. While our primary focus is on academic achievement we nevertheless strive to nurture additional values of leadership, resilience, enterprise and creativity.

“Our aim has always been to create an enrichment programme that offers a wealth of opportunities to suit the interests of all our students. This event was a brilliant showcase of the wide-ranging talents of our students – and all the extra work that they do to develop their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom.”

It’s been an exciting week here at The Hurlingham Academy, marked by my favourite event in the school calendar: Open Evening. And this year’s certainly did not disappoint. In fact, I truly believe it was our most successful yet. Doors opened at 4:30pm, and within the first 25 minutes, we had already welcomed over 400 visitors through the door. From that moment on, the entire school was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm.

I can hardly believe that September is already coming to an end. I’m incredibly proud of how well both staff and pupils have settled into the new school year. A particular well done to all those pupils who are new to our school , you've made a fantastic start. Year 7, especially, have adapted brilliantly to their new routines and surroundings; it already feels like they’ve always been part of our community.

It’s hard to believe we are only two full weeks into the new academic year. We’ve quickly settled back into what we do best: exceptional teaching and learning. The school has seamlessly picked up where we left off, with calm, focused classrooms led by passionate and expert teachers

Another week has truly flown by. Just last week, I spoke about the opportunities a new academic year brings — and already, I’ve seen so many pupils stepping up, getting involved, and even taking the lead.

I’d like to begin this term by extending a warm welcome back to all our pupils, parents, and staff. I hope you’ve all enjoyed a wonderful summer break and are feeling just as enthusiastic as I am about the start of a new school year. A special welcome also goes out to the new pupils and families joining our school community — we’re thrilled to have you with us.

I often discuss results with our students because they matter — they open doors and create opportunities. Results reflect hard work and deserve recognition. However, at The Hurlingham Academy we also prioritise educating the whole child, offering meaningful and inspiring enrichment experiences. This week has been a perfect example of that commitment.

I cannot believe that this term is coming to an end. The teachers are working incredibly hard to ensure that pupils have the best end of term experiences. On Monday we kicked off the week in style with our summer concert. It was so fantastic to see the pupils performing so confidently on the stage, and I know I always say this but the talent our pupils have always blows me away. This was followed on Wednesday and Thursday we had our fantastic performance of Jane Eyre.

As I said last week, one of my favourite sayings is, “good schools don’t wind down,” and The Hurlingham Academy proves this to be absolutely true. I’ve been genuinely amazed by everything the staff have organised recently. Just in the past two weeks, we’ve had careers talks, Prom, music trips, an art exhibition, animation workshops, scavenger hunts, numerous trips, and a Year 6 induction day. I actually had to ask my senior management team what day it was yesterday — it’s been that full-on!

As Principal of our school, this has been a week filled with proud moments. I have watched our key stage 3 pupils come to the end of their assessments, welcomed our new cohort of year 7s for their first induction day and got to celebrate another successful GCSE season with year 11 at their prom. With so many wonderful examples of success around the academy, I expect all pupils to be inspired, try their best and make the most of the opportunities we have coming up over the next couple of weeks.

The month of June brings with it many things. For our hardworking Year 11s, their external exams start to draw to a close and they will look ahead to their next journey at sixth form (after a very well deserved extended summer holiday of course). For the rest of school, June marks the beginning of the last half-term of a very busy and successful academic year.
