The Hurlingham Academy is committed to delivering a robust Careers and HE Guidance programme to all students in years 7-11.
The careers programme enables our young people to explore various career routes as soon as they start their journey at the Academy. The aim of the programme is to provide our students with an understanding of the world of work and support them in making decisions about their future.
All students in Year 7 have an opportunity to start exploring various career sectors and the pathways that lead to them. Our Year 7 students have access to ‘Careers Box’ and online provision that allows them to explore different options through testimony and videos.
In Year 8, the PSHCE curriculum helps pupils to meet professionals and hear from guest speakers. Pupils are able to explore the skills needed to enter the world of work. Year 8 also have a workshop from LAMDA which they are able to directly link to presentation and employability skills. Year 8 girls participate in ‘Girls in STEM’ annually. Year 8 also take part in First Give where they hone their planning, presentation and teamwork skills.
One of the aims of our careers programme is ensuring that students engage with professionals from various industries. We regularly host guest speakers from businesses and universities to talk about their career journeys. Year 9 also explore resources from King’s College University during tutor time. Year 9 have the opportunity to participate in the "7billions ideas" project, giving them the chance to develop their entrepreneurial skills and creativity
All Year 10 students undertake a compulsory work experience week during the summer term in quality work placements. This is an ideal opportunity for students to develop their confidence and independence while experiencing the world of work. Year 10 student participate in the ‘Speakers for Schools’ programme throughout the year. In their PSHCE lessons, Year 10 students experience vocational workshops from industry professionals (e.g. Chefs and Computer Coding experts)
During tutor time, Year 11 complete essential workshops on writing CVs and employability skills. All students in years 10 and 11 are invited to take part in our careers and pathways fayre which informs them about their post-16 options. Assemblies and workshops are delivered by guest speakers to inform students about apprenticeships and vocational qualifications.
The impact of the careers programme is regularly assessed by short post-activity feedback forms as well as larger end-of-year surveys. The careers team value student feedback and strive to implement student suggestions in planning of future activities. The impact of our careers programme is further measured through the destination data by looking at the number of post-16 leavers going into further education, employment or training.
