Third Consecutive Year of Significant GCSE Improvement at The Hurlingham Academy

Students and staff at The Hurlingham Academy are today celebrating their GCSE results, which have shown a third consecutive year of significant improvement.

72% of students achieved five or more A* to C grades including 4 or above in both English and maths – up from 63% in 2016 and the highest ever.

In August 2014, the predecessor school saw 42% of students gaining five or more A* to C grades including English and maths. Since joining multi-academy trust United Learning in January 2015, the school has gone from strength to strength, and seen a 30 percentage point increase overall in the number of students meeting this headline measure.

There were notable individual successes, including:

Stephanie Corbin, who achieved grade 9s in English Language and maths, two A*s and three As;
Benjamin Ntumba, who achieved grade 9s in English literature and maths, four A*s and three As;
Huda Abdalla, who achieved grade 9s in English Literature and maths, three A*s and four As;
Sunday Eguaroje, who achieved a grade 9 in maths and eight As;
Malak Karim, who achieved a grade 8 in maths, four A*s and five As;
Shifana Kunnathedath, who achieved a grade 8 in maths and eight As;
Kenneth Barba, who achieve a grade 8 in maths, three A*s and five As.

Leon Wilson, Principal of The Hurlingham Academy, said:

“We are absolutely delighted with these results today which demonstrate a significant, three-year upward trend for the academy. Everyone at the academy – students and staff alike – has worked tirelessly to drive up standards and to improve the outcomes our students achieve. These results are therefore testament to their efforts and are ones that students can take genuine pride in.

“I would like to thank staff for maintaining high aspirations for what our students can achieve and to students for working hard to meet them. I know that this year’s continued GCSE success will help to spur on our younger cohorts to achieve these and better results in the future.”

This week, I have been reflecting on the amazing community we have built here at The Hurlingham Academy. Last week, I wrote about the devastating effect of Hurricane Melissa and asked for any donations people were able to make. I can honestly say that the response has been phenomenal. Every day, I have seen pupils and parents arriving with shopping bags full of donations. I have been truly blown away by everyone’s generosity.

After a week of rest, reflection, and revision, both staff and students have returned to school this week full of energy and enthusiasm. For Year 11 students, I’m sure much of the half-term break was spent creating revision timetables and preparing for their upcoming mock exams.

Over the month of October, we have been very much looking outward at the world around us, with the commencement of Black History Month. For me, this is one of the most intellectually and emotionally engaging months of the year, as it gives us the opportunity to reflect on the profound impact of some truly inspirational individuals.

This week, our pupils have once again been at the heart of everything we do at the Academy. On Thursday, Mr Pudney hosted our first school council meeting of the academic year. I always look forward to hearing the feedback from these sessions. It's inspiring to learn what our pupils appreciate about the Academy, as well as the areas where they see room for improvement.

This week, I’ve been reflecting on the vital role our pupils play in the daily life of The Hurlingham Academy. Ultimately, the success of our academy is built on their contributions, and it’s been wonderful to see so many pupils stepping up. Our Year 11 prefects have been particularly outstanding over the past few weeks.

It’s been an exciting week here at The Hurlingham Academy, marked by my favourite event in the school calendar: Open Evening. And this year’s certainly did not disappoint. In fact, I truly believe it was our most successful yet. Doors opened at 4:30pm, and within the first 25 minutes, we had already welcomed over 400 visitors through the door. From that moment on, the entire school was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm.

I can hardly believe that September is already coming to an end. I’m incredibly proud of how well both staff and pupils have settled into the new school year. A particular well done to all those pupils who are new to our school , you've made a fantastic start. Year 7, especially, have adapted brilliantly to their new routines and surroundings; it already feels like they’ve always been part of our community.
