Cultural Capital Trips!

On Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th July, the entire school ventured into London to experience the rich culture and history our capital city has to offer. Students, grouped in their houses along with their house tutors, went out in groups of 25 to ten different locations in London.

Students had fantastic opportunities to broaden their horizons: from delving into the complex history of the British monarchy at the Tower of London, to considering the value of contemporary art at the Tate Modern; from learning about life on board the HMS Belfast during World War Two, to unlocking the mystery of the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum; from learning all about the effects of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes at the Natural History Museum, to reflecting upon how war has changed at the Imperial War Museum.

The two days really were an invaluable experience for staff and students alike, and here at the academy we are hugely proud with the both the engagement shown by students in their learning at the venues, as well as their exemplary behaviour. The number of comments from members of the public on the way in which the students conducted themselves is real testament to them. You’ve made the school very proud.

Weekly Newsletters

Newsletter 10.01.25

Happy New Year to all of our parents, students, staff, governors and members of our local community. At the start of a New Year, I like to reset my goals: to refresh my aims for the year. Here at The Hurlingham Academy, we know how important continuous improvement is.

Newsletter 16.12.24

It has been another busy week at The Hurlingham Academy. As you know, one of my favourite phrases is that good, or in our case outstanding, schools don’t wind down. As I walked around school this week I saw pupils working hard in every classroom. It has also been lovely to see key stage 4 pupils starting to receive feedback from their mock papers, and see pupils are responding to this feedback so positively.

Newsletter 06.12.24

As regular readers of the newsletters will know, I absolutely love the festive season. As soon as December hits in my house, the Christmas tree goes up, in all it’s flashing glory. I have also increased the number of Christmas trees we have up in school, to really get into the festive spirit.

This It has been another incredibly busy week here at The Hurlingham Academy. On Wednesday we had our school drop down day. During periods 1-3 years 7 and 8 were studying a wide range of computing skills ranging from spreadsheets to coding. I have to say from walking around the school, I was blown away by some of our year 7 pupil’s coding knowledge– although I really felt my age as I most definitely did not learn this at school.

Newsletter 22.11.24

This week, I have taken some time to reflect on our relationships with the parents and carers of the pupils in our care. As a Head, I do my best to be open to feedback from all of our stakeholders, including staff, students and, of course, parents.

Newsletter 15.11.24

This week I have been reflecting on the fantastic extra curricular opportunities our pupils have at this school. In the past 2 weeks alone we have had; 2 year 11 careers trips, one to the National Apprentice Fair and one to Ibstock Place, a year 7 rewards trip to the cinema, the year 10 Debate Mate launch followed by their first debating session, a year 11 art trip, year 10 advertising agency trip, a year 7 girls rugby tournament and to end the week, we waved year 9 pupils off on their adventures to explore the battlefields in France and Belgium.

Newsletter 08.11.24

After a week of rest, reflection and revision, both staff and students have come back to school this week full of energy. For years 11, I’m sure much of half term was spent creating revision timetables and preparing for their upcoming mocks. For all students, the ability to recall information that they have learned previously is vital.

Newsletter 25.10.24

It is hard to believe that the half term holiday is already upon us. It has been a busy week here at The Hurlingham Academy, with our usual House competitions (build a mole being a particular highlight for me), African drumming and dancing workshops and the Cultural Gala.

Newsletter 18.10.24

Over the month of October here at The Hurlingham Academy we are very much looking outwards at the world around us, with the commencement of Black History Month.

Newsletter 11.10.24

This week I have been reflecting on the vital role our pupils play every day here at The Hurlingham Academy, and how ultimately the success of the academy is down to them. One team of pupils who have played a vital role over the first few weeks are our year 11 prefects.
