Students Perform Onstage at The Royal Opera House

Students from The Hurlingham Academy took to the stage at the Royal Opera House today to perform for the world-famous institution’s season launch.

A group of Year 7 students from the Fulham school were specially invited to help mark the Royal Opera House’s much-anticipated launch event, where the venue announced its featured productions and operas for the upcoming year. Students performed a selection of songs from Bizet’s best-known opera Carmen!

Putting on an impressive musical display, The Hurlingham Academy students showed no sign of nerves despite the pressure of the occasion. They had spent weeks in school learning and rehearsing the songs to pull off such a challenging operatic set-list, but were delighted that all their hard work paid off with a polished performance.

The students are now preparing for a second – even larger scale – performance in June. This unique event will feature over 1,500 pupils from 40 schools across the country performing Carmen! at the iconic Copper Box Arena in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This performance is the culmination of a year-long project led by national schools group United Learning to introduce its pupils to opera.

Working in partnership with the Royal Opera House, the Voices Foundation and the English Pocket Opera Company, the aim of the project is to encourage pupils not only to listen to and understand opera, but to participate in and perform it. This is part of United Learning’s commitment to delivering an Education with Character to all its pupils – an education which provides a breadth of opportunities and experiences to help children become confident, well-rounded and ambitious young adults.

Leon Wilson, Principal at The Hurlingham Academy, said:

Performing on stage at the Royal Opera House has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students and pulling off such a fantastic performance took nerve, determination and hard work from each of them. This was the perfect example of what we call an ‘Education with Character’ – the chance for students to take on new challenges, gain confidence and hone their skills and talents.
I know that everyone is now excited to be working towards the national United Learning performance in June, where our students will join their peers in performing at another spectacular London venue. Not only has this been a brilliant introduction to classical music for our younger students, but to perform on this sort of scale is something few schools are able to offer and will be an unforgettable experience for them all.

It’s been an exciting week here at The Hurlingham Academy, marked by my favourite event in the school calendar: Open Evening. And this year’s certainly did not disappoint. In fact, I truly believe it was our most successful yet. Doors opened at 4:30pm, and within the first 25 minutes, we had already welcomed over 400 visitors through the door. From that moment on, the entire school was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm.

I can hardly believe that September is already coming to an end. I’m incredibly proud of how well both staff and pupils have settled into the new school year. A particular well done to all those pupils who are new to our school , you've made a fantastic start. Year 7, especially, have adapted brilliantly to their new routines and surroundings; it already feels like they’ve always been part of our community.

It’s hard to believe we are only two full weeks into the new academic year. We’ve quickly settled back into what we do best: exceptional teaching and learning. The school has seamlessly picked up where we left off, with calm, focused classrooms led by passionate and expert teachers

Another week has truly flown by. Just last week, I spoke about the opportunities a new academic year brings — and already, I’ve seen so many pupils stepping up, getting involved, and even taking the lead.

I’d like to begin this term by extending a warm welcome back to all our pupils, parents, and staff. I hope you’ve all enjoyed a wonderful summer break and are feeling just as enthusiastic as I am about the start of a new school year. A special welcome also goes out to the new pupils and families joining our school community — we’re thrilled to have you with us.

I often discuss results with our students because they matter — they open doors and create opportunities. Results reflect hard work and deserve recognition. However, at The Hurlingham Academy we also prioritise educating the whole child, offering meaningful and inspiring enrichment experiences. This week has been a perfect example of that commitment.

I cannot believe that this term is coming to an end. The teachers are working incredibly hard to ensure that pupils have the best end of term experiences. On Monday we kicked off the week in style with our summer concert. It was so fantastic to see the pupils performing so confidently on the stage, and I know I always say this but the talent our pupils have always blows me away. This was followed on Wednesday and Thursday we had our fantastic performance of Jane Eyre.

As I said last week, one of my favourite sayings is, “good schools don’t wind down,” and The Hurlingham Academy proves this to be absolutely true. I’ve been genuinely amazed by everything the staff have organised recently. Just in the past two weeks, we’ve had careers talks, Prom, music trips, an art exhibition, animation workshops, scavenger hunts, numerous trips, and a Year 6 induction day. I actually had to ask my senior management team what day it was yesterday — it’s been that full-on!

As Principal of our school, this has been a week filled with proud moments. I have watched our key stage 3 pupils come to the end of their assessments, welcomed our new cohort of year 7s for their first induction day and got to celebrate another successful GCSE season with year 11 at their prom. With so many wonderful examples of success around the academy, I expect all pupils to be inspired, try their best and make the most of the opportunities we have coming up over the next couple of weeks.

The month of June brings with it many things. For our hardworking Year 11s, their external exams start to draw to a close and they will look ahead to their next journey at sixth form (after a very well deserved extended summer holiday of course). For the rest of school, June marks the beginning of the last half-term of a very busy and successful academic year.
