Student Leadership

At The Hurlingham Academy, we are passionate believers in the importance of collaboration.

For a school to be successful, everyone - staff and students alike - needs to be pulling in the same direction.

For this reason, student leadership and voice are a vital part of what we do. We have an active school council which meets on a half-termly basis for students to give formal feedback on the direction of the school. These meetings are co-chaired by the Head Boy and Head Girl. Each form in the school is represented on the council by a form captain.

We also have informal mechanisms for student feedback, including raising issues through school prefects, and a suggestion box that is checked weekly.

Student Council

Student voice is very important at The Hurlingham Academy and pupils in all years are able to speak into how their school is run. The Student Council meets every month and is run by the Head Boy and Head Girl from Year 11. It is student led and council members are nominated by their tutor groups to represent them for the academic year. Around 50 pupils meet every month to discuss teaching and learning, school community life and the school facilities. The minutes to each meeting are then discussed within the Senior Leadership Team and appropriate actions made.

Year 11 Prefects

At the end of Year 10, pupils can apply to become prefects. Our prefect system allows pupils a context in which to learn how to lead, serve and make decisions. ‘Discere et Servire’ is our school motto and reflects our two-fold vision for our pupils to become learners and people who serve others. As prefects, pupils learn important skills and character traits that are key to university admission as well as vital for life and work. Prefects host our annual open evening, help at parents’ evenings, show guests around school, write in the weekly newsletter and help at after school clubs and prep with the lower year pupils. In addition to this, they serve in the canteen and lunch queue every lunch time. This year, we have had 44 Year 11 pupils, along with a Head-boy, Head-girl and four deputies who have been interviewed and selected to be prefects. They wear a prefect badge and a gold tie and they complete duties and responsibilities around school each week.
